Although the focus for my study in this class is Rap/Hip-Hop, I was listening to the remix of Paper Planes by MIA and one of the lines stuck in my mind. When Bun B is doing his rap he states the line, "Being poor is a disease, gotta hustle up a cure", and I realized though this statement is simple it creates a larger atmosphere for the song.
The song, "Paper Planes", is--from the research I've done--about immigration. The chorus reflects this idea by stating "All I wanna do is (three gunshots) and a (gun click, register sound) and take your money" which is supposed to reflect, from my analysis, what many people think immigrants will do when they come to the country (or, any country). The major aspect of this song is that the singer, MIA, is from Sri Lanka so she is speaking about the hegemony and how it affects her. She tries to dispel the myths of immigration by playing with them.
Simultaneously, Bun B is commenting on the hegemony and analyzing how it afflicts him as an already established citizen. So, his line "being poor is a disease" emphasizes that he has been affected by the hegemony by poverty. His statement creates poverty as a type of illness that has been passed along to the impoverished and, therefore, the impoverished has to find a way out. His second statement "gotta hustle up a cure" demonstrates the medicine to fix the illness. Hustling then is removed from the idea of being something "bad" but rather a type of way to gain power in the situation. His statement then ties into the overall meaning of the song.
The overall meaning of the song is to stop believing that those who suffer under the hegemony only find specific way outs that are "unlawful" because they want to. Rather, those in power prevent those who are powerless from moving up. Then, to combat this prevention of gaining power the impoverished find ways out which become deemed as unlawful.
Although Bun B may not have meant all of this commentary when he stated his line, it is important to define that his lyrics have more meaning than mere statements. I do not claim that this analysis is the only way nor the right to read the song but it was the feeling I got when listening.
I've attached the link to the youtube video. The specific parts that I am speaking of occur at the following times:
The Chorus: around :55
The Bun B Verse: around 1:20
The actual line: around 1:42
